Make the Most of Your Amaryllis

Amaryllis are popular Christmas flowers because the flowers, grown from flower bulbs, range from white to dark red. Some of the blooms are even striped, a lot like candy canes.

The Double Dragon is one of the most desired versions of this type of flower.

Things You Need to Know About the Flower

These plants are lovely planted in a flower garden; however, many prefer to grow them in container gardens for greater versatility.

For best results, the flower can kept outside in partial shade during the spring and summer, but it is a good idea to bring it inside in late September.

If you wish for the flowers to bloom during the holidays, you will need to cut back the stalk after the flowers wither and keep in a dry, cool place – no greater than 60 degrees.

About 10 weeks before you want it to bloom, start watering it again and place it where it will get plenty of sun. Within 3 weeks, the stalks and leaves should appear followed by blooms in about another 3-4 weeks.

Weird Things About the Flower

Unlike most flowers, this flower will not bloom unless it feels crowded in its surroundings. When planting the bulb, the container only needs to be about two inches larger than the bulb, which makes it difficult to get it to bloom in the flower garden.

Also, the bulb should not be completely covered with soil. It does best when planted with the top of bulb exposed.

If you have grown this type of plant and have pictures of flowers that you would like to share, or if you would like to share your experience, I would love to post your story in the collection of flower garden ideas.
