I am in the process of backyard landscaping right now. We started with a mesquite-filled, rocky double lot in desert country, and I haven’t gotten very far. However, if you stick around I promise you will see results!
When getting our home set, the contractors luckily cleared and partially leveled the lots. Next, I had top soil brought in and my Dad leveled it using his tractor with an attached leveler.
We put in a water line to go to the back of the property. I really wanted to put in an underground lawn sprinkler system with timers and all, but that didn’t fit the budget. I’ll have to save for that.
I was told that it was okay to put the top soil over the rocks and I didn’t need to pick them up before having the soil brought in.
The soil did cover most of the rocks, but some of them came through and I had to pick them up before planting grass.
I decided to make use of the rocks instead of buying flower garden borders, so for now some of the large rocks are outlining the lawn.
The next step was planting grass. My brother-in-law has a green thumb, so I sought his advice (and help) in planting the lawn. He recommended Bermuda grass, because our lawn will be in full sunlight. From the time that we planted the grass seed, it was about 3 weeks before it started to sprout.
My plans include...
Building a garden shed, planting
evergreen trees
, planting
rose bushes
and fruit trees, in addition to shade trees and gorgeous backyard flower gardens in
raised gardens
. I would like to plant a
forsythia
, but it is not recommended for my hardiness zone, so I'm considering an
abelia
instead since I love to have hummingbirds buzzing around. It brings fond memories of my Grandma.
