Designing a Basic Herb Garden

When planning a basic herb garden, my advice is to start small.

There are a lot of different types of herbs and it is beneficial to grow them at home. You can choose from:

  • Culinary herbs (for yummy dishes, canning and relaxing herbal tea)
  • Medicinal herbs (great for home remedies)
  • Ornamental herbs (wonderful additions to a flower garden)

It is a good idea to know what herbs you want to plant, what they are used for and whether or not you will use them. Otherwise, your gardening of herbs will seem like a waste. By starting small, you have time to figure which herbs you like, how much you use, and which ones you need plant more of.

Suggested steps for planting a basic herb garden…

  • Choose your herbs first
  • Herbs
Herbs can be started from herb seeds or you can plant them by using garden plants . Once you get going, you can actually harvest seeds from your herb plants. If growing from plants, do not buy them until you are ready to plant.

  • Select your location
  • The location of your herb garden will depend on the sunlight that your herb plants require. Herbs that require full sunlight grow best outside; however, if you choose containers that are not too heavy, you can set them out outside to sunbathe.

If the plants require indirect sunlight or shade, they are appropriate for an indoor garden . Most herb plants love sunlight, so you might have to use florescent light or grow lights for the best results if growing herbs inside.

  • Select your containers
  • Herb Container Garden If you are planting herbs in your flower garden, you can skip this step, but if you are working with container gardens your choice of containers, pots or planters is vital.

Make sure that the container has proper drainage and it is large to enough to house the plants that you intend to grow in it. It should be anywhere from six to twelve inches deep. If moving your containers for sunlight will be necessary, it is best to use several containers versus using a big one.

  • Prepare the soil
  • Herbs grow best in rich soil that is well drained. If the soil is bland, it may affect the growth of the herbs, the taste of culinary herbs, or the aroma. Using soilless potting mix is great for growing herbs.

  • Plant the herb plants or herb seeds
  • Arrange the plants in the container or garden. Be sure to leave enough room from them grow to full size. If planting in containers, leave at least an inch at the top of the pot to allow for watering and fertilizing.
