The Glorious Cabbage Palmetto

by Dee of Tampa, Florida

My husband and I moved to Florida about five years ago. We had always wanted to live in Florida and be surrounded by beautiful palms. Well when we bought our home it had a huge yard it was lovely. There was only one thing missing - The palm trees we’d always envisioned lining our yard.

We checked around with several garden centers and came to the conclusion that the palm that would do the best in the conditions in our yard would be the cabbage palmetto. This palm gets its name from the heart of the palm. People actually eat the heart as a cabbage. That was a little bit of info that I wasn’t aware of.

This tree can grow very tall. They can reach up to 80 feet high. Most however average somewhere between 20-50 feet in height. They grow approximately 2 inches a year. It is a very hardy palm. It does very well in dry conditions - it’s drought resistant. This palm can even tolerate hurricane force winds. It can also handle the cold very well.

A local landscaper informed me that the this palm is great for landscaping, especially if it is combined with other palms such as the canary date palm or even the coconut palm. For now, we’re happy with our palmettos. But we’re considering adding the other two palms that the landscaper mentioned, probably within next year or two. Hopefully, they’ll flourish as well as our palmettos have. They are absolutely glorious!
