Cranesbill Geranium

by Christa
(Montana)

One of my favorite perennial flowers to grow in my zone 4 gardens is the Cranesbill Geranium. I currently have two different colors growing in my backyard and they are a delight to see each spring and summer.

One of the reasons I enjoy them is because of the easy maintenance of these flowers. I planted them according to the planting instructions that came with the plants and they took off. They have a distinct leaf shape which is different to the rest of the plants and are easily identified.

The color of the blossoms, in my case a purple and a pink, is wonderful and adds variety and color to any outdoor growing space. Another feature which I find appealing is the mounding shape of the plant. They mound easily on their own and are low-growing, which makes them ideal in front of other taller plants. They stay green all summer long and if you deadhead the blossoms, they will continue to bloom. I also enjoy the dark green foliage of this plant.

They are very expensive, but can be split to provide you with more plants throughout your landscape. If you are looking for a hardy perennial to add some spice and color to your gardening, then the Cranesbill Geranium should do the trick for you. These plants do not seem to require anything other than the occasional fertilizing and water. They also do not require full sun in order to be a prolific addition to any yard. Plant it and almost ignore it and get the beautiful blossoms.
