Design a Flower Garden Keep It Weed-Free
Tips for keeping your flower garden weed-free…
Don’t plant in weedy soil. Before planting the garden, sift through the soil using a digging fork and remove any roots or seeds that you find. Believe it or not, weeds can re-sprout when you start watering your garden if a seed, a small root or stem is unknowingly left in the soil.
Design a flower garden to prevent bare ground Mother Nature doesn’t like bare ground and weeds will cover it if given the right opportunity. In an annual or perennial flower garden, be sure to cover bare soil with garden mulch to help with weed control. You can also use
landscape rocks
and weed barriers to control weeds. Before laying the rocks or mulch, it is a good idea to line the bed with a weed barrier mat.
Weed pulling can’t be history No matter what you do in the establishment of the garden, sadly to say, you will have weeds. When they appear, remove them right away. They are easier to pull when they are small and they need to be picked before they seed. It is easier to pull weeds when the soil is moist. You might even consider using a weed puller to make the task easier.
What to do when the weeds get out of control After you chew yourself out for not pulling the weeds when they were young, you will have to take initiative to get rid of the weeds. You can hoe them and pull out the roots, but that can require intense labor. There are many
organic gardening
products for controlling weeds.
We’ve got some pretty gnarly weeds around here that look like trees when they get out of hand. My best tip is, don’t let them get out of control!
Weed control can become an enormous task if it isn't taken into consideration when designing a flower garden. When you water the garden, weeds will pop up. If they are not taken care of, they can overtake your garden. Pulling weeds is my least favorite gardening chore, and I will do just about anything to avoid it.
