Tips for Adding a Pond When Designing a Flower Garden

While researching about designing a flower garden, I found that I really can put a pond in my backyard landscaping without hiring a professional landscaper.

I have always wanted one, but I thought that the expense was outrageous and I was worried about the upkeep.

I talked to many people who have one and I got some tips on working one into my flower garden design in the "do-it-yourself" manner. I also got some excellent advice on the upkeep of a pond.

There are actually three ways to create a pond…

  1. You can dig the pond and line it with a pond liner. (Here is an excellent video about how to do this.)
  2. You can use a pre-formed pond.
  3. You can purchase a pond kit that includes the pre-formed pond, filters, pump and accessories.
Before I choose which one to do, I will do comparative shopping. At first glance, the first way is the cheapest, but it would be nice to go with number three and have everything included, but it appears that the price reflects the manufacturer doing the decision making for you. I'll choose the cheapest way because it is always good to save money when you are designing a flower garden.

In my yard, I can't dig because there is too much rock, so my pond will be put in a raised garden.

Advice I have gotten about designing a flower garden around a pond…

  • It is best to place the pond away from trees with falling leaves.
  • With a pump and filter, ponds are pretty well self-maintaining.
  • Make sure that the pond is placed where it has access to electricity to run the filtration system.
  • If you intend to use aquatic plants, be aware that most aquatic plants require 5 to 6 hours of sunlight.
  • When using aquatic plants, it is advisable to dig a shelf that is 10 to 12 inches from the rim for the plants to sit on.

I am still in the process of researching ponds, aquatic plants and koi fish, so if you have any advice, please share it and I will post it with the other contributions to the flower garden ideas. This list of advise will continue to grow, so be sure to bookmark it if you are interesting in developing a garden pond.
