Selecting Evergreen Trees and Shrubs

There are several benefits to planting evergreen trees and shrubs which make them a popular choice for backyard landscaping and even front yard landscaping ideas.

The Benefits of the Evergreens

Evergreens get their name because they pretty much stay green all year.

While deciduous trees and plants shed their leaves, the evergreen will provide color and foliage throughout the season because of their ability to gradually replace dead leafs and needles throughout each year.

Evergreens are tolerant to cold weather and drought conditions. Many of them grow great, even in poor soil, because they don’t require as many nutrients as deciduous plants or trees.

Evergreen trees and conifers are often mixed up because conifers are actually evergreens. The difference is conifers, like cedars and pines, are filled with needles rather than leaves and produce cones. Nonetheless, if they reproduce their leaves or needles, they are considered evergreens.

Evergreens and pine trees are often used as windbreaks or planted close together to create privacy screens. Hedges made from evergreen shrubs can also substitute for a fence, or provide an awesome backdrop for a flower garden.

Making the Selection

When choosing which evergreen would be best for you, consider the space that you have to plant them, their projected size when they are full grown, and of course, their care requirements.

Evergreens that are tolerant to drought conditions should be planted separately from those that require more water. Most evergreens grow great in full sunlight, while others may require partial shade. Following the recommendations for each individual tree or shrub will ensure that they grow their best, even though they are tolerant to many less than ideal conditions.

Evergreen shrubs and trees make the whole idea of landscaping and flower gardens a lot more interesting.
