My Florida Backyard Garden Oasis
by Chrystie of Miami, FLWhen my family moved to Southern Florida from the North I had no clue where to start when it came to landscaping our yard. Most of our yard is partly shady, the soil is on the dry side, and it is also sandy. I wasn’t sure what would thrive in conditions such as these.
My first step was to discuss my concerns with a local landscaper. I wanted some shrubbery. After much consideration I decided that I liked the sea grape and the buttonwood the best, so we started with those. I wanted lots and lots of flowers in my Florida backyard. I wanted them planted all around the perimeter of my house and also all along the walkway on the front lawn. I also wanted flowers all along the fencing in the backyard. I wanted a little greenery mixed in too. For that I chose the Southern maidenhair fern I love the look of ferns. Next, it was on to choosing flowers. I found so many flowers that would thrive in my yard. I was so pleasantly surprised that there were so many. I chose milkweed, paw paw, bromeliads, crinum lily, spider lily, goldenrod, and rain lily, just to name a few. My yard is now my oasis. I love to sit in my yard and enjoy the beautiful landscaping. All of the plants and flowers are flourishing. It looks amazing. I’m so happy that I took the time to figure out which plants and flowers would do well in my yards conditions. It made it very easy to get the look that I wanted in my yard.
