Making Flower Image Placemats

Flower image placemats will look wonderful on a formal dining room table with a fresh flower bouquet as a centerpiece.

They are also great for a Hawaiian theme party or for flower garden parties for children that are into kids gardening and want to show off their accomplishments to their friends.

For outside parties, the placemats can be made out of construction paper that is laminated after it is made. You can use cloth placemats and sew on the flower image for indoor use or if you are really creative, you can embroidery it or paint the image with fabric paint.

How to Make the Placemat without a Pattern

Supplies needed:

  • Flower pictures
  • Tracing paper
  • Carbon paper
  • A pencil
  • Materials, placemats or construction paper
  • Fabric paint and paint brushes, crayons or markers
  • Sewing supplies if sewing
  • Lamination supplies if laminating
  • Scissors and paste (depending on the type you choose)

You can usually find attractive flower pictures on the internet, or you can browse through a flower encyclopedia or refer the flower photos that you have taken of your own flower garden.

The flower photos need to be taken close-up where you can readily see the details.

Trace the details using tracing paper and then transfer it onto the cloth or paper using carbon paper.

For kids art, you can transfer the photo onto construction paper and have them color it with crayons or markers, or you can transfer it to several different colors of paper and have them cut them out and mix and match different parts to create an original flower to paste onto their placemat.

For adults, you can transfer the image directly on the placemat in order to paint it or embroidery it or you can transfer it onto a different cloth, cut it out and sew it onto the placement using fabric paint to bring out the details. If you are really creative, you can even use pillow stuffing and a quilting technique to create a raised image of the flower.
