Fox Gloves – The Beauty of the Flower Garden

Fox gloves are biennials that are of the digitalis family. The blooms are simply gorgeous with a great variety of colors such as white, yellow and shades of pink and purple.

Most foxgloves have bell shaped flowers that point downward; however, Nature Hills Nursery carries a species called the Candy Mountain which is one of my favorites. Its rose-colored flowers point upwards revealing the beauty of the flower.

Warnings About the Plant…

Sad to say, the genus of digitalis is toxic, so it is not a good idea to plant it in your flower garden if you have livestock (or kids and pets that eat plants). However, if you desire to attract birds and butterflies, this might be the flower for you.

How to Grow These Flowers

These flowers are commonly grown from flower seeds , but they are available as seedlings as well.

They grow pretty good in zones 4 to 9. Some require partial shade while some grow in full sunlight, depending on your zone.

They prefer acidic soil that is well-drained.

Have you grown fox gloves? If so, share your flower garden ideas, photos and experiences.
