Using Garden Mulch in Your Flower Garden

Garden mulch protects the soil from the sun and the rain and reduces erosion creating a comfortable environment for the roots of your plants and flowers while it encourages earthworm activity which it is great for a garden.

It helps the soil to retain moisture and it helps with weed control decreasing the watering requirements and the time that you spend pulling weeds. It also insulates a flower bed during the winter protecting your perennial plants

Basically, there are two types of mulch…

  1. Organic
  2. Synthetic

Organic mulch includes compost, grass clippings, straw, leaf mold, pine needles, manure, sawdust, hulls, bark and wood chips, just to name a few.

Synthetic mulch includes weed-resistant fabric and various forms of plastic or mulch made from rubber.

Synthetic mulch can be rather ugly, so for a flower garden, many top it with wood chips, bark or landscape rocks for a more aesthetic appeal.

Organic mulches do degrade, but in the process they feed the plants and improve the soil. It will require replacing more often than synthetic mulches, but in my opinion it is well worth the time and expense.
