Garden Plants vs. Germinating Herb Seeds
When starting a
basic herb garden
you basically have two choices:
- Planting herbal garden plants
- Germinating your plants from
herb seeds
What is your preference?
Personally, I prefer starting my herb garden from pre-started plants. It is less challenging, it doesn’t require much preparation, and the herbs are available for use sooner. However, germinating your herb plants from herb seeds can be a lot of fun and it can save you some money.
The Advantages of Herb Plants
- The waiting time before the herbs are usable is shorter
- It is easier to do when compared to starting from seed
- It doesn’t require as much of a “green thumb”
- They are great for impatient people
The Disadvantages of Using Pre-Started Plants
- Sometimes is hard to find healthy plants
- Purchasing pre-started plants is bit more expensive than buying herbal seeds
The Advantages of Herb Seeds
- It is more rewarding in terms of a sense of accomplishment
- It can be exciting when you first see your seeds start to sprout
- It is less expensive than purchasing herb plants
- Your annual herb plants can be restarted the next year with no expense if you collect and store the seeds
- Supply of seeds is pretty unlimited when compared to herbal seedlings
The Disadvantages of Herb Seeds
- You will need to tend to them for a longer period of time
- The tasks involved are greater
- It requires more of a “green thumb” when compared to planting herbal plants
