High Mowing Organic Seeds Catalog
My favorite garden catalog is the High-Mowing Organic Seeds Catalog, a farm-based seed company located in Vermont. I worked at a small organic vegetable farm last year, and we ordered many seed packets from the company and were extremely satisfied. They offer heirloom varieties, as well as hybrid and open-pollinated. All seeds are organic with no genetically modified contamination, which is something I appreciate. They offer a variety of veggies, flowers, herbs and cover crops.
High Mowing Seeds is an independent and family-owned company that prioritizes sustainability and caring for the soil. Their attitude of responsibility is something I truly value as a gardener who respects the complexity of the soil-food web.
The catalog itself is extremely colorful and available in PDF format on the High Mowing website. If you prefer a paper copy, they offer an environmentally friendly version that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (certification ensures that the forest is responsibly managed and not clear cut) and printed on 30% post consumer paper. In addition to ordering from the catalog at the farm where I worked, when we were done, we used its pages to wrap home made soap, securing it with a printed Avery label. It gave the soap very colorful, cheap packaging that was garden-themed and more sustainable than plastic bags!
I have especially enjoyed growing their salad mixes (including DMR Lettuce Mix & Purslane) beets, Red Russian kale, kohlrabi and calypso beans. Dragon carrots are probably the most exciting to harvest and clean because of their intense fuschia exterior contrasting with a orange and yellow bulls-eye core.
Happy gardening!
