How To Attract Hummingbirds

by Alison
(Bryn Mawr, PA)

Hummingbirds are absolutely my favorite kind of bird in the world. I get so happy when I see them nearby. I have always kept a feeder in my yard so that they'd come in that way, but in the last several years I have looked into attracting them through my garden. These are some of the plants that have worked for me.

Making sure to plant lots of red flowers was the first thing I did, and it definitely helped. These birds seem so drawn to the color red. I think red goes great with lots of other colors and looks gorgeous in a garden, so it worked out really well. Some of the red flowers I planted included Coral Bells and Red Columbine.

I didn't want my whole garden to be red, so I looked into other plants too. One of the things that has worked out really well for me is having a Rhododendron bush. I think it's one of the most beautiful plants in my gardens and the hummingbirds just seem to flock to it.

However, I have to say that the plant in my garden that has been the most successful at attracting hummingbirds is my Red Beebalm. It has a very strong, pleasant sent, and I think it really draws the hummingbirds in. I see them right around the plant every single day.

I am so pleased with my decision to try to attract hummingbirds to my garden. I love to sit out on my front porch and try to spot them. My neighbors have even commented on lively my garden seems to be now.
