I Wish I Still had a Cut Garden

by Madeline
(Danbury, CT USA)

I move a lot. I am happy with the moves, but there are things about every house that I miss. One of the things that I miss that I had at one house was a beautiful cut garden. My house was located in Danbury, CT and while the house was not my favorite house, the late spring and entire summer was incredible, and I loved being outdoors in my garden…. And I loved bringing my cut flowers in to sit in my office, my dining room table, and my bedroom. Seeing those blooms always brought a smile to my face.

I did not design the garden, but did replace the annuals with flowers of my choice. The previous owner had laid out bulbs, including daffodils, hyacinth (these smelled so fabulous!), and tulips. I started in early spring cutting blooms. I enjoyed this so much that white tulips became my favorite flower.

Different types of irises bloomed throughout the spring and summer. Carnations and mums kept the middle of summer and fall in full color. Azaleas and climbing roses kept the backdrop wall in full color and foliage year-round.

I learned a lot about flowers at this house and spent a lot of time at the local nurseries. I learned to cultivate dahlias because I loved the dinner-plate sized blooms and the wild variations of color that I could grow. I learned to plant the tubers, and I carefully dug them up at the end of the season.

Just writing about this garden has been an inspiration. As I type and look out at the snow falling outside my window... yes, it is time to bring this joy to my new house….
