Ideas for Kids Gardening
Kids gardening is a solution for bored children, irresponsible children and lazy children. It is something that most kids enjoy and it teaches responsibly and makes memories in the process.
Gardening with my Daddy is one of my most memorable events of my childhood. I didn’t “get in the way” of his gardening, but I helped with planting, and my favorite part, picking tomatoes and asparagus.
He always let me plant and take care of the strawberries. I learned that if you are not responsible, you won’t be rewarded with the harvesting of the berries.
A Learning Experience...
One of most memorable moments with my kids was when we researched herbs as a home school lesson. They wrote a report on a specific herb, and then they got to plant them from
herb seeds
as their science assignment. Their excitement when the seedlings appeared is unforgettable. We also planted white pumpkins, roasted the pumpkin seeds, saved some for planting the next year, and made a homemade pumpkin pie from scratch. They loved it.
Teaching Nutrition...
I remember planting a lilac bush with my Dad that I could see out of my bedroom window. My fond memories also include one time when my Mother was out of town and Dad and I picked green tomatoes, squash and eggplants that he fried up for breakfast. At that time, I didn’t like garden vegetables, but I tried them and I have been a veggie lover ever since. Gardening experiences can be wonderful and memorable to both the children and the parents. It doesn’t need to appear as “work” or “chores”, but more of a concept of sowing and reaping. It will teach the children responsibility and maybe even cure the anti-vegetable syndrome that many children seem to have.
