My Own Personal Weeders!

by Rachel
(Yorktown, VA)

Keeping up with the weeds in my garden has always been a major chore. I am lucky enough to have a very large yard and garden, but with that comes lots and lots of weeds to pull. When I am in my garden, I prefer to focus on my plants and not spend all the time I have there pulling weed after weed. Luckily, my kids have helped me find a solution.

My children love to be outside as much as possible. They also always want a little bit of pocket money. They're still small, and they are just happy to be able to get little things like a coloring book from the dollar store. One time when they started pestering me for ways to earn money, I decided to start offering them fifty cents for each bucket of weeds they pulled. I had no idea this plan would be such a hit.

Just about every day my kids are offering to go out in the yard and pull weeds. Because they pull weeds so often, there are sometimes not enough weeds for them to fill buckets, but they don't seem to mind. They just set the bucket in a safe place and then happily get to work on their bucket the next morning. My oldest says he is saving up to buy a set of Legos.

Having my kids help out in the garden has been such a pleasure. I get to enjoy gardening, and get to spend fun time with my kids. I hope they grow up to love gardening too.
