How to Make Orchid Leis
Orchid leis are just wonderful to wear to a Hawaiian theme party or to use in Hawaiian weddings. They can be made from fresh flowers from your
orchid plants
or from artificial flowers.
Supplies needed to make one lei…
- About 50 blossoms (you can use several different types of blooms if you wish)
- A lei needle (you can use a large sewing needle as a substitute)
- A spool of lei twine (dental floss can be used as a substitution)
In order to make the lei, you will thread your needle with the twine and string the flower blooms together by stitching through the center of each bloom. After all of the flowers are threaded, you tie the ends of the thread together. If the lei is made from fresh flowers, you will need to store it in the refrigerator in a plastic bag with some moisture until you are ready to wear it.
Some ideas for making leis…
Unless you specifically grow orchid plants, chances are you will be short on blossoms to make a lei. The good news is you can mix flowers. Orchids look great with tuberose and the two used together will make fragrant leis.
For men, you might consider making leis out of ti leaves or cigar flowers. You can also use sea shells, kukui nuts and Hawaiian greenery amongst your orchids or Hawaiian flowers to take up the space if you are short on blossoms.
Hawaiian suppliers even sell lei making kits as well as native Hawaiian flowers and greenery that are otherwise hard to get. If you are making them for a wedding, or giving them out to guests at luau party, it might be helpful to order the supplies online.
