Petunias

by Rachael
(Brighton, CO USA)

Every spring around Mother's Day, I look forward to planting my annual flowers. There is nothing quite as breathtaking to me as the first colors of spring, which can be seen all throughout my yard.

My absolute favorite annual flower to plant in the spring is the petunia. They come in so many different varieties, colors, shapes, and sizes, that it is hard not to favor this annual flower over all others.

Petunias can sometimes look sparse when first planted in early May. But by July, the flowers have usually taken off and taken over my garden. All sparse spaces become filled in with large, beautifully colored blooms and lots of green leaves. They can grow as tall as a foot and a half, making flower beds around trees look like they are bursting with color and greenery. It is such a pleasing sight to see a beautiful bed of petunias in the spring and summer!

Traditionally every year, my largest and most visible flower bed is filled with petunias which are red, white, and blue. It is a great patriotic way to show pride for our country, while still creating a beautiful flower bed with beautiful, bold colors.

The petunias I usually plant are unscented, or have a very mild scent. While I usually enjoy the pleasant, mild scent of fragrant petunias, the blooms, in my opinion get larger and more bold on the unscented varieties.

I am counting down the days to Mother's Day weekend to start preparing my flower bed for my beautiful display of petunias. What a wonderful way to welcome in the warmer, longer days of spring and summer!
