Planting Palms: Reconstructing Habitat

by Roland
(Hialeah)

I'm usually not one to do volunteer work, but a few weeks ago a friend invited me to go do some volunteer work. I was hesitant at first, but she kept insisting and saying it would be fun.

Finally I gave in, more to get her off my back than to do the work. I planned to slack all day and pretend that I was doing something. When I got to the place there were a lot of people there and everybody seemed as if they had taken a happy pill.

Everyone kept saying thanks for coming this is going to be great and I kept counting the time to go home. We had to plant some palm trees to aid in the recovery of the habitat. A man arrived with a bunch of plant trees and tools and directed us to plant them the proper way.

He gave us the tools and we were on our own. In the beginning I didn't want to do anything but seeing the enthusiasm of everyone got me interested and I started working planting palm trees. As I kept working I found myself having fun and ended up planting more than 25 palm trees. My friend was very happy and after we finished, she took me to have lunch as a way of saying thank you to me. I will definitely volunteer again. It was fun.
