Red Dogwood Tree in Brooklyn

By Lisa of Brooklyn, New York

One of the best places to be in the spring is Brooklyn, New York. New York has many things to offer-- great restaurants, parks, museums among other things, but springtime is truly great because of the red dogwood blooms that you find all over Brooklyn.

The red dogwood tree along with the white dogwood is a broad beautiful tree that adds so much color to the concrete jungle of the city and gives color to the bleak urban landscape. Dogwoods along with other flowering trees provide terrific shade and beauty without being overpowering.

Since I always envied the beauty of the dogwoods in our local parks and sidewalks, a few years ago I decided that I wanted a small piece of Brooklyn in my backyard, so I went to our neighborhood nursery to purchase my own dogwood tree.

While I know that planting trees can be a fun-filled adventure for some, I found it quite difficult from beginning to end. To start, finding someone who is knowledgeable about the tree was hard to find. I finally found someone at the Botanical Garden who gave me a brief overview on how to take care of the tree each season. Once planted and armed with enough information on how to take care of it, I planted the tree in the center of my small Brooklyn home.

When I purchased the tree it was during the month of August-- one of the hottest months of the year-- but by March of the following year I had the pleasure of watching the first blooms sprout. The color was fantastic and it was hard to stop watching it as it developed from March to June with the leaves started to fade away.

Years later, I am still like a little child awaiting Christmas each spring when my red dogwood begins to bloom in my little piece of Brooklyn.
