Tips for Selecting Seed Trays
You can usually find seed trays in garden seed catalogs or at a nursery; however, if you have trouble finding them you might check with eBay.
For beginners, I suggest that you use a seed starting kit which usually comes with trays for starting seed.
Why to Use Trays for Growing Seeds…
Whether you are planting annual flower seeds or
herb seeds
, or if you are getting a head start by starting garden vegetable seeds indoors, or if you are recycling flower garden seed from your garden, starting them in trays instead of pots is very useful. - Divided trays help you to grow seeds one by one so that the roots from the seedling don't intertwine with other plants.
- They make transplanting the seedlings easy.
- They allow you to move the starting plants if needed in regard to sunlight.
- It is simple to tell if each seedling is getting enough water.
Personally, I love the plastic, divided trays for starting seed. I have tried to use a tray that is not divided. It works; however, sometimes the roots from other plants get intertwined and you stand the chance of damaging the roots when transplanting the seedlings. When transplanting a seedling that was grown in a plastic, divided tray you just rip the tray and discard it and plant the seedling, attached soil and all, into the ground. There is less of a chance that you will damage the root system.
