The Family Cut Flower Garden

by Jennifer
(Sarasota, Florida)

One of the greatest things about growing a garden is being able to cut the flowers and make beautiful arrangements with them. That's actually the reason I began my garden for cut flowers.

My aunt and uncle owned a florist when I was just a child. I always loved going there, and I absolutely loved to look at the flowers. I loved the colors, sizes, shapes, and of course I loved the smells of them. My aunt would let me go into their refrigerator to get flowers out, and I loved the way it smelled in there. I remember taking lilies to school for show and tell once. So, I suppose I have grown up as a flower lover.

It wasn't until my aunt passed away that I began really missing those days spent at the florist when I was young. I decided to start my own flower garden. I planned out my garden before I began, so that I could utilize my space to the best of my abilities. I planted lilies, snapdragons, tulips, and zinnias. I also planted baby's breath, lavender, and lamb's ears.

To me, there is nothing better than giving cut flowers arrangements to a loved one. I always give gifts of my flower arrangements for birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine's Day, and Easter. My family loves getting flowers from my garden, and they've stopped using our local florist altogether. They prefer my flowers. I also make arrangements for my own house, and I genuinely love doing it. It brings me joy, and it takes me back to helping my aunt and uncle in the old florist.
