What I Put in My Butterfly Garden

by Sarah
(Merrimack, GA)

I have loved butterflies for as long as I can remember. When I was a little kid I used to chase them all day long. Spotting them is such a nice, simple pleasure. I have wanted to attract more butterflies to my yard for a long time. I recently started work on a butterfly garden. I haven't had it for long, so I don't have too many tips, but here is what has worked for me so far.

When I went to my local plant nursery, the staff there recommended that I purchase something called Butterfly Bush. It has lots of small, delicate, flowers, and smells absolutely lovely. I was told that butterflies love to get nectar from that plant, and that is how it got its name. Sure enough, butterflies have flocked to it since I planted some in my backyard.

I was also told that the Marigold is a very good plant to plant if you want to attract butterflies. This made me very happy because I have always loved Marigolds. I think they look so bright and sunny. I haven't seen as many butterflies around the Marigolds as I have seen around the Butterfly Bush, but there have definitely been butterflies around it since I planted it in my yard.

I am hoping to learn more about butterfly gardens so that I can get even more in my yard. My family already wants to come over and see all the butterflies that are showing up around my garden. Someday I hope to have the perfect butterfly garden where you can always see butterflies whenever you look.
